The Frank J. Selke Trophy is awarded "to the forward who best excels in the defensive aspects of the game." Selke was one of the games greatest "architects", successfully orchestrating teams that won 13 Stanley Cups, and were finalists in 11 other seasons. In his 34 seasons with Toronto and Montreal he was a key ingredient to many noteable achievements in the early days of hockey, such as the construction of Maple Leaf Gardens and the upgrading and rebuilding of the Montreal Forum.

The trophy was presented to the NHL by the NHL Board of Governors in 1977 as a tribute to Selke's years of service to the sport and the League. The winner of the trophy receives $10,000 and the runners up $6,000 and $4,000.
