Hart Memorial Trophy


The Hart Memorial Trophy is awarded annually "to the player adjudged to be the most valuable to his team." At the end of the season, the winner is selected by a poll of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association in the NHL cities. The winner of the trophy will receive $10,000 and the runners up $6,000 and $4,000. The original trophy was first presented to the NHL by Dr. David A. Hart in 1923. His son, Cecil Hart was a former manager/coach of the Montreal Canadiens. Since then, the original trophy has been retired to the Hockey Hall of Fame, and a new one was presented in 1960. Although the trophy is awarded to the MVP of a certain team, it is generally accepted that the trophy signifies the MVP of the entire league.
