Prince of Wales Trophy


The awarding of the Prince of Wales Trophy has seen many changes since it was first presented by His Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales in 1924. It was first awarded to the team finishing first in the American Division of the NHL between 1927-28, through to 1937-38. From that time until the first expansion in 1966-67, the trophy was awarded to the team with the most points in the regular season. After expansion, the trophy again became a divsional championship and it was presented to the winner of the East Division Regular season until 1973-74. In 1974-75 it was awarded to the winner of the Prince of Wales Conference until 1980-81. In 1981-82 to 1992-93, the trophy was awarded to the playoff champion in the Wales Conference and since 1993-94 it has been awarded to the playoff champion in the Eastern Conference.
