In the words of many players of his era including Hap Day, Frank Selke
and Art Ross, Brimsek was the best goalie of his time. He reportedly
had one of the fastest glove hands ever seen, and in a test by Art
Ross as to who would play goal one night, Brimsek kicked out 25 consecutive
shots delivered by Ross form 10 feet out.
Brimsek
spent most of his pre NHL career with the Pittsburgh Yellowjackets
of the EAHL before being signed by the Boston Bruins. During the
1938-38 season with the Yellowjackets, Brimek posted a league leading
1.75 GAA, and posted 5 shutouts. After being signed early in the
1938-39 season, Frank played 43 games for the Bruins, replacing
Tiny Thompson in net.
In
his debut game against the Montreal Canadiens, Frank recalled the
Boston home crowd reaction, or better, the lack of fan reaction
to his playing net. The normally a loud, boisterous crowd were silent
when he was announced as the starting goalie. Brimsek lost his first
game 2-0, but that didn't stop him from finishing up the season
with a league leading 33 wins, a league leading 10 shutouts and
a league leading 1.56 GAA. After his first loss, Frank recorded
3 consecutive shutouts and set a new Boston Team record of 231 minutes,
54 seconds of shutout goaltending. Brimsek then followed that up
with yet another 3 consecutive shutout games. All in all, Brimsek
had 6 shutouts in his first 10 games! This landed his nickname of
"Mr Zero". He added the Vezina Trophy and the Calder Trophy
, a selection to the NHL First All Star Team and a Stanley Cup to
his award collection that same year.
During
his first four full seasons with the Bruins, Frank led the NHL every
year in at least one goaltending category or another. In 1943 and
1944 seasons Brimsek enlisted in the military and by the 1945-46
season he was back with the Boston Bruins. It was apparent that
the time spent in the military had taken just a little bit of Frank's
speed away. In his last 5 seasons he only led the league in 3 of
those years in one category or another. On September 8, 1949, Frank
was traded to Chicago where he played for one year before retiring
from hockey.
In
all, Frank was selected to the EHL Second All Star Team once, won
the George L. Davis Jr. Trophy(EHL) for the fewest goals against
in 1936 and was selected to the AHL First All Star Team in 1938.
Brimsek was named to the NHL First All Star Team in 1939 and 1942,
won the Calder Trophy in 1939 and the Vezina Trophy in 1939 and
192, and was named to the NHL Second All Star Team in 1940, 1941,
1943, 1946, 1947 and 1948. Frank also played in the NHL All Star
Game in 1939, 1947 and 1948 and has 2 Stanley Cup rings. In 1966
Frank was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
