When you examine Paul Coffey's statistics, the one of things that jumps out at you is that he has never led the NHL in any category in any season, yet Coffey has 4 Stanley Cup rings, is second only to Gretzky in All Time Assist Leaders with 1102 assists, is the All Time Assist Leader among active players(as of end of 1999 season), and is second only to Gretzky in All Time Points Leaders. The second thing that jumps out at you is that he plays defense, a position not traditionally known for producing league leaders in the scoring race.

The Weston Ontario native began his hockey career in the MTHL(Metropolitan Toronto Hockey League) and then proceeded to Sault Ste Marie of the OHL. In his two years there, Coffey began to improve his production, speed and shot, scoring well over a point a game. Coffey was the Edmonton Oilers first choice, and 6th overall in the 1980 entry draft. In his first year(1980-81) he netted 9 goals and 32 points. That would be the last year that Coffey would fall below 50 points until the 1996-97 season. In his second year he scored 29 goals and had 60 assists to lead all defensemen in scoring. Coffey along with his teammates helped lead Edmonton to a record 417 goal season. Over the next 2 years, Coffey's production increased to 96 and then 126 points in 1983-84, finishing second to Gretzky, as the Oilers won their first Stanley Cup. The 1984-85 season was by far Coffey's best season ever. Finishing the season with 48 goals, 90 assists for 138 points saw Paul finish just one point behind Bobby Orr's record setting 139 points in a single season, the most for a defenseman. On March 14, 1985, Coffey tied Tom Bladon's record for the most points in a single game by a defenseman(8) with 2 goals and 6 assists. Coffey won his 3rd Stanley Cup with the Oilers in 1986-87, but with his production falling off to 67 points that year he was traded to Pittsburgh.

After a little more than 4 seasons with Pittsburgh, Coffey went on a "tour" of 6 more NHL teams, Los Angeles, Detroit, Hartford, Philadelphia, Chicago and Carolina. For the most part, Coffey's production seems to be dwindling but with each passing day, Coffey just adds to his records. To date Coffey holds team records for the Edmonton Oilers for Most Points by a Defenseman(138) in a season, and is tied with Gretzky for Most Points in a Game(8). He also holds the Detroit Team Record for the Most Points by a Defenseman for a single season, with 77, and the same record for the Pittsburgh Penguins with 113. Coffey was elected to the OHA Second All Star Team in 1980, the NHL Second All Start Team in 1982, 1983, 1984 and 1990 as well as the NHL First All Star Team in 1985, 1986, 1989 and 1995. In 1985 he won the Norris Trophy and repeated that same feat in 1986 and 1995. Paul has also played in 14 All Star games in his 19 year pro history.
